OPST Commando Heads — The Ultimate Skagit Line for Single and Two-Handed Rods
Born from decades of innovation in Sustained Anchor Systemology (SAS) by legendary Skagit pioneer Ed Ward, OPST’s Commando Heads are not just lines — they’re a revolution in fly fishing performance.
Cast Anywhere. Fish Everywhere.
OPST Commando Heads are engineered to maximize the performance of shorter spey rods, switch rods, and single-hand fly rods. With their ultra-short, compact design, these lines excel where traditional lines fall short — in tight casting quarters, high wind, and when throwing heavy flies.
At first glance, their length might surprise you. But that’s where the magic lies. The shortened head provides unmatched efficiency, effortless rod loading, and surgical control — making Commando Heads the most fishable Skagit lines on the market today.
Why Anglers Are Switching to OPST Commando Heads
-
Short, Powerful, and Precise: From underhand casts to roll casts and hauls, Commando Heads give you the power to cast in nearly any style — even with minimal backcasting room.
-
Perfect for Tight Water and Big Flies: Throw large streamers and heavy sink tips with ease, even on 4wt rods.
-
Sustained Anchor Casting Performance: These are true Skagit lines, optimized for water-loaded casting with maximum rod load and control.
-
Single or Double-Hand Friendly: Available in grain weights from 150 to 475, they pair seamlessly with everything from 7’6” 3-weights to 14’ 9-weights.
-
Compact Power: The short, thick profile allows for deep rod loading and maximum distance with minimal effort.
Whether you're chasing steelhead, trout, bass, or salmon, Commando Heads turn your rod into a precision-engineered slingshot, launching flies with accuracy and power — even in tight spots.
Versatility That Redefines the Game
Commando Heads allow you to fish larger flies on lighter rods, expanding your presentation options without upsizing gear. Imagine fishing size 2 streamers on a 4wt — that’s what Commando delivers. No longer are you confined to heavy rods for big-fly tactics.
Plus, if you’re fishing single-hand and your Skagit cast isn’t clicking, switch to overhead, single spey, or even snake roll — Commando Heads are that versatile. You’ll enjoy every fish more, and every cast will feel like play.
Commando Head Grain Weight Guide:

OPST Commando Head:
Commando Heads are Skagit lines, so they are used with a water-loaded cast. Rod load is generated through water tension and maintained throughout the stroke. The Commando Head's short length and thickness makes it ideal for this style of casting. Coming in grain weights of 150-475, in increments of 25 grains, Commando Skagit Heads match with everything from 7'6" 3-weights to 14' 9-weights. OPST has taken Skagit-style fishing, optimized it for steelhead and salmon, and brought it to the world of trout and bass. Skagit tactics have traditionally been associated with two-handed fishing for salmon and steelhead, but OPST's Commando Skagit Heads, in their lighter grain weights, are short enough to excel on single hand fly rods.We regularly fish them on rods as short as 7'6". And if you have a 9 foot 5-weight, you owe it to yourself to test it out with a 200 grain Commando Head. Or try a 275 grain on your 8-weight. The Commando Head turns your single hand rod into a slingshot, a technical streamer presentation tool that you can cast almost anywhere since a Skagit cast, especially a single hand one, requires almost no back cast space. One of the major advantages of a Commando Head is that it allows you to fish big flies on relatively light rods. What this means is that you no longer need to fish a 6 or 7 weight to fish streamers. You will be surprised by the size of fly you can fish on a 4-weight with a Commando Head—size 2 streamers are no problem. We all know that 10 inch trout far outnumber 20 inchers, so in fishing a Commando with a light rod, you are able to enjoy every trout–not just the big ones.
